Salle 301
Economic outlook for natural resources: Where do we stand?
Chairs: Imad Rherrad, Jean-Philippe Brosseau and Jean Labbé (ASDEQ)

Since the economic recession in 2008, the prices of primary materials and basic products have fluctuated wildly. Even oil has been subject to the same phenomenon, with prices dropping sharply since June 2014. Is this price instability a sign that the current economic model of natural resource exploitation and use is running out of steam? Or is it simply a rebalancing of the world’s offer and demand for primary materials?

Regardless, the facts remain: natural resources continue to play a decisive role in everyday life. The emerging economies harbour a sharp appetite for natural resources, and it is largely due to this voracity that forecasters are banking on a strong global recovery for natural resources in the medium term.

This conference provides the opportunity to present the outlook for the global offer and demand of natural resources, along with the latest projections from the private sector on the price of metals produced in Québec. The constraints and growth drivers in the Québec and Canadian mining sectors will be explored from this perspective. Finally, a portrait of mining investment in Québec will be presented, focusing particularly on the capacity of small exploration companies to secure financing and the regulatory and tax framework that governs their expansion.
